Nothing shows us spring is here more than mother nature showing us her bright colored tulips. Keukenhof Gardens, Netherlands is the number one place in the world to wave good-bye to old man winter and say hello to springtime. Each year 7 million bulbs are planted here to show off the iconic flower. During the eight short weeks that the park is open over 1 million people will pay it a visit. Not only does the park have over 800 varieties of tulips on display, it also hosts numerous flower shows, a windmill that is more than a century old and a sculpture garden with around 100 pieces of art. Although the gardens aren’t a UNESCO World Heritage site, if you are visiting the Canals of Amsterdam during the spring then you definitely want to tack this onto your itinerary.

Getting to Keukenhof Gardens

Getting to Keukenhof Gardens is an easy day trip from Amsterdam. The gardens are technically in Lisse, just a little outside of Amsterdam and there are many ways you can get there. The vast majority of visitors choose to take a bus directly from Schiphol Airport. The Keukenhof Express (bus 858) leaves straight from the airport and delivers you at Keukenhof Gardens. This is a convenient option if you have a long layover in Amsterdam or are there just for the weekend and really need to make the most of your time. There are luggage storage facilities that can hold your bags during your visit. In this, and many cases, it’s best to buy a combi ticket that includes round trip transportation and entrance to the gardens. Not only will this option save you money, you won’t have to wait in the ticket line after you get there. If you aren’t planning on getting there from the airport then there are also bus departures from several stations in Amsterdam and many tour operators throughout the city sell tickets with transportation included.

Tips during your visit

The gardens are laid out over about 89 acres so give yourself plenty of time to visit. There are 800 varieties of tulips, not to mention all of the other species of flowers spread throughout numerous gardens. So if you want to see everything don’t put yourself in a rush and give yourself time to stroll around and take everything in. Also, be sure to grab a park map/guide when you get there so you can navigate through the different paths and gardens and make sure you don’t miss anything. There are several restaurants and cafes throughout the park or you can pack your own lunch and enjoy a picnic.
